Maestro JORMA PANULA was a Professor at the Sibelius Academy for 20 years from 1973 on. Since 1986 Jorma Panula has taught in Stockholm as a Professor at the Academy of Music. This easily-smiling man is world famous for his ability to teach conductors. He has been called the maestro of maestros and the man who moulds maestros. Esa-Pekka Salonen, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Osmo Vänskä, Sakari Oramo, Mikko Franck, Vladimir Ashkenazy and many, many other talented young conductors studied under his tutelage in Finland and abroad. It is often said that Panula teaches without a method. Of course this is an exaggeration but the truth is that he believes that every student after learning the principles should find his own way of conducting. Methods or not, Panula has his Must! Principles. First you must have an orchestra, the instrument of the conductor, and secondly you must have a video recorder to show the students how they performed. But to Jorma Panula the most important personal principle is the enthusiasm, sensitivity and the ability to encourage students to use their personal talents and their own individual character.

The St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1967, and the outstanding masters of the St. Petersburg school brought their highly artistic and humane approach to music making to the ensemble during its formative years. The guidance of such conductors like Ravil E. Martynov (one of E. A. Mravinsky's most outstanding students and one of the greatest Russian conductors), the leadership of A. Arkanov, and the high level of musicianship in the ensemble, enabled the St. Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra to celebrate its 35th Anniversary in 2002 as an orchestra of the highest international standing, having toured extensively, and has performed with great success in the USA, Japan, Spain, Germany, China, Mexico, and other countries. The orchestra is well known for its compelling interpretations of the Viennese classical symphonies, including those of Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, as well as for its excellent and refreshing performances of the works of Bach, Händel and Vivaldi. The historical and musical connection between all periods of music is clearly reflected in the orchestra's concert programs. The 19th century is represented by such works as the symphonies of Schubert, the overtures of Rossini, the serenades of Brahms, and the waltzes of Strauss. The orchestra's interpretations of the deep and resonant sounds of such Russian music as the "Waltz-Fantasy" of Glinka and Tchaikovsky's "Serenade for Strings" have become well known achievements of the national musical culture. The orchestra's reputation for successful performance also extends to music of the 20th century, as represented by works in its repertoire such as Stravinsky's "Apollon Musagète," Prokofiev's "Classical" Symphony, Schönberg's "Transfigured Night," and many others. Vasily Petrenko, the chief conductor of State Academy Orchestra of St Petersburg is also Principal Conductor of Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
